Nanaimo file # 2022-24404 Break in and theft from shed

At approximately 2:45 AM on July 16th thieves broke into a backyard shed located in the 300 block of Kennedy St. The lock to the shed was pried off and taken was a Stihl FS110 brush weed eater, Stihl chainsaw in an orange case (gas powered) and a men’s grey Cannondale road bicycle. The complainant heard some voices around that time but didn’t think anything of it. Tip: Kennedy St and other streets in the Old quarter all have back alleys, Thieves use these alleys to access backyards and sheds. Now is a good time to consider reinforcing the lock to the shed, installing sensor lights and placing locks on back gates. This will not stop all crime but it will reduce your chances of being broken into or having items stolen. Additionally, serial numbers on anything of value in sheds and homes should be recorded and pictures taken.

Nanaimo file # 2022-24660 Residential Break and Enter

At approximately 11 AM on Monday July 18th a home on Sunset Rd was broken into. The owners had been out for less than one hour and upon their return, they found a window open and some items missing. Items taken consisted of tow spare FOB’s for their vehicles, a brown leather Roots purse, 9-year-old Samsung tablet, two bottles of wine, 12x18 inch dark brown jewelry box, a white gold wedding ring set, a Pandora bracelet with multiple charms, a men’s gold wedding band, a men’s gold ring with JK engraved on face and a set of baby teeth. A white/light colored grey van and a Caucasian man and woman were seen at the house and are associated to the van.

Nanaimo file # 2022-24716 Theft of landscaping tools

Sometime overnight on Tuesday July 19th orange and black Husqvarna tools were stolen from outside a home on Morpeth Ave. The tools consisted of: Unit battery S/N 202003069403, hedge trimmer S/N 20213900711, battery S/N 202005099219, and charger with S/N 20210589415. No suspects, no witnesses.

Sometime overnight on July 19th a shed located in the 100 block of Kennedy St was broken into. The door to the shed was pried open and taken was a yellow Dewalt saw and a blue Makita 2-gallon compressor.

Nanaimo file # 2022-24648 Commercial Break and Enter

At approximately 3:15 AM on July 18th an unknown person stole approximately $3000 of dog food from Bosley’s Pet Food store, located at the University Mall. A CCTV camera from a nearby business showed a man pushing a shopping cart across the parking lot with a large quantity of pet food. It appears entry was made through a rear emergency exit door. The stolen dog food consisted of 12 ounce tins, with the main brands being Acanna, Orijin, Perform Atrin, and World Canin. The suspect was described as being of shorter stature, and wearing a hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

Nanaimo file # 2022-24901 Theft of speed reader board

For the second time in recent years, a solar powered speed reader board and pole were stolen from its location in Lantzville. The board was taken sometime on July 20th and was installed at the intersection of Owen Road and Lantzville Road. This time, thieves made off with the entire post that held the speed reader. The serial number of the reader is 28041 and the cost to replace it is approximately $5000.

Nanaimo RCMP file # 2022-25016 Theft from vehicle

Sometime between July 19th and July 21st a vehicle parked on Newcastle Ave was riffled through and various items were taken. The missing items consist of a folding camping chair and a pair of shoes. Tip: This is a classic crime of opportunity resulting from the vehicle being left unlocked and with items in plain view. Forty –five percent of all theft from vehicles are from vehicles left unlocked.

Summary

During the summer months, crimes of opportunity increase significantly. Thefts from sheds and vehicles are just two categories that police in every community see an increase in. Thieves are looking for an easy way in where they won't easily be detected. Sensor lights, locks on back gates, even small ones act as deterrents. Never leave anything of value in an unattended vehicle and ensure they are always locked. Lastly, if you hear something late at night, don’t ignore it. Simply turning on a light, opening and closing a door or making noise may be enough to scare thieves off.
