Kitimat RCMP weekly report September 17-21, 2022

Residential alarm

On September 17, 2022 at 4:38pm, Kitimat RCMP was notified of a single alarm hit to the front door of a residence on Yukon St. Police attended and confirmed that the residence was secure and there was no movement inside other than dogs. Deemed false by attendance.

Roadside check stop

On September 17 2022 Kitimat RCMP conducted a check stop near Highway 37 and Forest Ave. Approximately 150 vehicles were checked, three drivers were screened for impaired driving. All three drivers were not impaired.

Commercial alarm

On September 19 2022 Kitimat RCMP were dispatched to a commercial alarm in the 700 block of Lahakas Blvd. Police attended, cleared the building and determined the alarm was triggered due to an insecure door. The building was subsequently secured.

Single vehicle collision

On September 20 2022 at 2:42pm, Kitimat RCMP responded to a report of a single vehicle that reversed into the Nechako Centre. Police responded, significant damage to the vehicle, however the driver was not injured. The building suffered some minor damage, nothing to compromise the integrity of the building. The driver was issued a violation ticket for reversing while unsafe and the vehicle was towed.

90 day Immediate roadside prohibition

On September 20 2022 at 7:28pm, Kitimat RCMP officer observed a vehicle driving eastbound on Haisla Blvd, swerving back and forth within the lane. Police checks on the license plate of that vehicle indicated that the registered owner did not have a valid BC drivers license. A traffic stop was effected, police noted that the driver had an odour of liquor emanating from their person and initiated a roadside impaired operation investigation. The driver provided two suitable samples for analysis, both resulting in a FAIL result. The driver was advised they were prohibited from driving, the vehicle was impounded and the driver was also served a violation ticket for no drivers license. This driver had a 4 year old child in the vehicle. Road safety is paramount, police remind all drivers, if you care to consume alcohol, please plan a safe ride home.

Fire

On September 21 2022 at 5:12pm, Kitimat RCMP were requested to conduct a check well being Swan St. Police attended, attempted to make contact with the subject inside the residence, the person could be heard yelling and throwing items around inside. Neighboring residences were cleared to ensure no public was at risk, and police maintained containment of the subject residence. The subject tried to exit out the garage without success, ramming an unoccupied police vehicle. A male exited residence and was taken into custody. A Fire investigator attended the scene and the fire remains under investigation. Police remind the public, when there is a concentrated
police presence in an area, to remain clear as it is most likely a risk to public safety.

Animal

On September 21 2022 at 7:00pm, Kitimat RCMP were alerted to a report of a cougar on Eagle Crescent in Kitamaat Village. Conservation officers were advised. Police conducted patrols and were unable to locate the cougar. Police remind everyone to be aware of animals that are native to the area, exercise caution when outside.
