Salmon Arm RCMP February 21 to March 5 2024, Calls for service: 266

The purpose of the Crime Chronicle is to educate and inform the public about some of the crime trends occurring in Salmon Arm and other files of interest.

February 22

4th Ave SE: A woman reported that she received a phone call at 6:00am from a man claiming to be a fraud investigator. The man told the victim that her payment for the purchase of a $700 cell phone did not go through and provided directions on how to pay. The victim followed the man’s directions that resulted in her sending the fraudster $10 000 in bitcoin, via a bitcoin ATM. The victim stated the called had a thick accent. Calls back to the phone number went unanswered.

Be very cautious of phone calls received from unknown persons that are requesting money from you. If you receive a phone call from anyone claiming you owe them money, police recommend hanging up immediately. If you want to check if you owe money, call the business directly by calling a phone number obtained from a safe source such as the official business website, or a phone book.

February 23

10th Ave NE: A man reported that at 11:00am he noticed his vehicle was running, and then realized someone had attempted to steal it over night. The older model pickup truck had the steering column pulled around and multi-tool shoved into the ignition. Forensic identity Services attended and examined a couple items left behind, but were unable to locate any prints. February 24

800 block Mobley Rd: A man reported that someone had thrown a rock through his window early that morning. Police attended where the man showed a 4’x4’ window that had been smashed, and a large rock painted with Our Pet Rock under the window. Video surveillance showed a dark coloured SUV pull into the driveway, a female exited the vehicle and walked over to the window. The female then used the rock to smash the window and calmly walk back the vehicle and depart. Motive was unclear. February 27

Tim Horton’s 10th Ave SW: Staff at Tim Horton’s reported a two unsheltered men were outside having a fire when one of the men forced his way into the store through a rear door. The male appeared focused on getting water to put out the fire, but stole an employee’s cell phone while inside. Video surveillance was obtained and police were able to identify the suspect. The next day police located the suspect, still wearing the same clothing as seen in the video footage, and arrested him. Police also seized a cell phone matching the one stolen from the employee. The man was subsequently released on conditions, and with a future court date to speak to the allegations.

February 28

4th Ave SW: Salmon Arm RCMP were on patrol and observed a man known to be prohibited from driving, driving a Toyota Venza SUV. Police stopped the vehicle and confirmed the man’s identity and his driving prohibition. The man was issued a future court date to speak to the allegations, and his vehicle was impounded for the mandatory minimum 7 days.

March 3

300 block Trans Canada Hwy: An employee at a store reported an attempted break and enter over night. No entry was made, but there was substantial damage to the building. Forensic identity Services attended and examined the scene, and were able to obtain some fingerprints. Two suspects have been identified. The file remains under further investigation.

March 4

Canoe Pt Rd: Salmon Arm RCMP were on patrol and observed a man known to be prohibited from driving, driving a Mazda SUV. Police stopped the vehicle and confirmed the man’s identity and his driving prohibition. The man was issued a future court date to speak to the allegations, and his vehicle was impounded for the mandatory minimum 7 days.
