File # 2023-67

The Sidney North Saanich RCMP are warning the public about an increase in thefts from vehicles which include the removal of catalytic converters from exhaust systems. Police have seen several thefts where vehicles have been damaged and parts of the vehicle’s exhaust system have been removed. Police believe thieves are targeting vehicles catalytic converters because they contain precious metals which can then be sold.

The unfortunate reality is that the thief will only make a fraction from the precious metals stolen compared to the cost associated to the owner or insurance company for the repairs. We have increased patrols in areas where these thefts have occurred but we are also asking the public to be vigilant in where they park their vehicles, said Corporal Andres Sanchez of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP.

Police suggest that you choose an area which is illuminated overnight and that when possible, vehicles should be kept in a secure area such as a garage or fenced lot.

Police are asking the public for any information which may help identify the people responsible for these thefts. If you are a victim or have information, police are asking you to call the Sidney North Saanich RCMP Detachment at 250-656-3931 or Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
