The Kamloops RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 277 calls for service from Friday Feb. 2 to 9 a.m. on Monday Feb. 5, 2024. Below are some highlights from those reports.

Impaired driving, obstruction

Switching seats during a traffic stop landed two people with court dates and Motor Vehicle Act violations.

On Feb. 5, 2024, around 1:35 a.m., a Kamloops RCMP frontline officer was proactively patrolling when he conducted a traffic stop on a red minivan with an obscured license plate. As the officer approached, he observed a man in the driver’s seat switch spots with a woman passenger.

Both were arrested for obstruction. Further investigation revealed the woman was a prohibited driver. A roadside breath test also supported that she was impaired while in the care and control of a motor vehicle. She received a 30-day vehicle impound and 90-day driving prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act; violation tickets for no insurance, misuse of license plates, and no driver’s license; as well as a court date related to prohibited driving and obstruction. The man received a court date for obstruction and fail to comply with release conditions.

Break and enter to a business

For approximately $60 worth of chocolate, a thief caused more than $1,000 worth of damage to a downtown business.

On Sunday Feb. 4, 2024, around 10:40 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a break and enter at a business on the 700-block of Victoria Street. A suspect who was wearing dark clothing and a backpack smashed a window and stole some chocolates, damaging merchandise inside the store during the process.

Several police officers responded, but the suspect was gone. Anyone who witnessed, has information, or captured video that could be related is asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-3562.

Quick police action revives woman

A woman was taken to the hospital alive, thanks to the help of a Kamloops police officer this weekend.

On Feb. 3, 2024, around 8:35 a.m., a police officer was patrolling Victoria Street West when he observed a person lying on the road near Seymour Street, with several people nearby. A woman appeared to be having a heart attack and was unresponsive. The officer began chest compressions and after four minutes, the woman regained consciousness.

She was transported to hospital by ambulance shortly after.

Assault reported under the Overlander

Police are investigating an assault report which saw one man taken to hospital this weekend.

On Feb. 2, 2024, around 10:40 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were called to an area under the Overlander Bridge near the 200-block of Fortune Drive where a man had allegedly been assaulted by a group of people. The man was transported to hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Impaired driving collision

A man lost his license for 90 days following a two-vehicle collision on the North Shore this weekend.

On Friday Feb. 2, 2024, around 10:10 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers responded to the area of Tranquille Road and Fortune Drive, where a white car had rear-ended a grey one. As part of the investigation, police administered a roadside breath test on the driver of the white car, which registered a ‘Fail’ reading, indicating a blood-alcohol content exceeding .08.

The driver was arrested, lodged in cells to sober up safely, and issued a 30-day vehicle impound and 90-day driving prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Downtown assault

Police were in the right place at the right time near bar close this weekend.

On Saturday Feb. 3, around 1:25 a.m., a Kamloops RCMP frontline officer was parked outside a commercial address on 5th Avenue when he observed the establishment’s staff struggling with a man who was swearing, yelling, and causing a disturbance. The man had allegedly assaulted another patron and was being removed. The victim was uncooperative.

The man was arrested for being intoxicated in public and lodged in cells to prevent continuation of the offence. He was released without process when sobered.

Church broken in, items stolen

A North Shore church had thousands of dollars in items stolen during a break-in reported Friday morning.

On Feb. 2, 2024, around 10:25 a.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers were called to a church on Fortune Drive where a break-in had occurred sometime after 8 p.m. the night before. Electronics and miscellaneous items were stolen and damage was observed in multiple areas.

The Forensic Identification Service Unit attend and collected evidence. Anyone with information, including video obtained in the area that may be related to this investigation, is asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-3333.
