No criminality suspected in human remains investigation

The circumstances surrounding the death of a person whose remains were recently discovered in Kamloops are not considered suspicious by police.

On Jan. 23, 2024, Kamloops RCMP officers were called to an area near the Red Bridge on the South Thompson River, where remains – later confirmed to be human – were discovered amongst the fire debris of what was believed to be a transient camp.

A police presence was in the area as part of the investigation that followed, which included support from the Forensic Identification Services, an RCMP fire investigator, frontline officers, the Serious Crime Unit, and General Investigation Support Team.

Based on the findings of the sudden death investigation to date, police do not suspect criminality was involved and will be clearing their presence at the scene today, Feb. 1, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.

The BC Coroners Service is conducting a concurrent investigation. No further information will be released by police.
