File # 2022-45964_46008

The Kamloops RCMP and Tk’emlups Rural RCMP Detachment have received in excess of 30 calls in the past two days with reports of a fraud scam some Kamloops residents have fallen victim to, costing them thousands of dollars.

Scammers are calling landlines and posing as either legal counsel or friends of victim’s family members, who claim they need money to pay for bail or legal fees after being involved in an accident they are at fault in. The scammers are also posing as the family member and on numerous occasions have been so convincing, the victims believed the person to be their loved one in danger.

A female suspect was identified on two occasions picking up money from a residence. The female is identified as possibly Asian, petite, 5’2, and the passenger of a white SUV or car. It is believed the female is not working alone. Photos are disseminated for immediate release.

Kamloops RCMP would like to remind the public that scammers are very believable, but lawyers or any other professional agency will never request to meet to pick up cash in a parking lot, a restaurant, a park or at their residence. The Kamloops RCMP General Investigation Support Team, Crime Reduction Unit and frontline officers are actively investigating these offences. Anyone with information is asked to call the Kamloops RCMP non-emergency line at 250-828-3000.

Fraudsters in Kamloops

The Kamloops RCMP have received multiple recent reports of fraud in the City today.

Scammers are posing as either legal counsel or friends of victim’s family members, who claim they need money to pay for bail or legal fees.

While scam phone calls have unfortunately become very common, the crimes committed today are particularity concerning as the offenders are attempting to make arrangements to meet with the victims personally. We would like the public to understand the bail process in Canada is very different than what is portrayed in American television, which would never involve meeting a stranger in a parking lot or restaurant. It is important to never give out personal information or your home address. said Sgt. Kevin McIntyre of the Kamloops RCMP.

The Law Society of British Columbia maintains a lawyer directory to confirm active lawyers in the province, and the Kamloops RCMP can assist anyone who may be concerned their loved one has been taken into custody.

The Kamloops RCMP General Investigation Support Team, Crime Reduction Unit and frontline officers are actively investigating these offences. Anyone with information is asked to call the Kamloops RCMP non-emergency line at 250-828-3000.
