Burnaby RCMP’s Victim Services Unit would like to invite the public to an upcoming public information session happening Wednesday, April 17 at Metrotown as part of Prevention of Violence Against Women Week 2024.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a pattern of controlling behaviours used to maintain power in a relationship by one partner over the other. Domestic violence affects people from all ages and backgrounds. While each case is unique, abusers use a range of abusive behaviours to control their partners, including physical, psychological, sexual, financial and spiritual abuse.

Burnaby RCMP’s Victim Services Unit provides support, practical assistance, information and resources to anyone impacted by crime and trauma, including people impacted by Intimate Partner Violence. In 2023, Burnaby RCMP’s Victim Services Unit was involved in 2,019 files supporting victims, including 508 files where victims were impacted by Intimate Partner Violence, including domestic disputes, assaults, and criminal harassment.

The goal of the upcoming community information session, which will also include community partners, is to share available resources that can assist and empower anyone impacted by gender-based violence.

Intimate partner violence has a huge impact on victims and communities. We want people to know there are resources and supports available. The goal of this information session is to educate, inform and help empower our community, said Michelle Callander, Burnaby RCMP’s Victim Services Coordinator.
