Update #1 on resumption of police enforcement of injunction order in Fairy Creek Watershed
2023-08-15 14:33 PDT
Earlier this morning, on August 15, 2023, the BC RCMP resumed their enforcement of the BC Supreme Court’s injunction order granted to Teal-Cedar Products Ltd., after a series of complaints that the terms of the injunction have been violated over the previous several weeks by Teal Cedar Products Ltd.
Operations began at approximately 9:00 a.m. today, when officers with the Police Liaison Team (PLT, formerly known as Division Liaison Team or DLT) spoke with the protesters who had blocked a bridge over the Gordon River, and advised that enforcement would begin. They were provided an opportunity to abide by the terms of the injunction and leave the area, or relocate to the designated protest/observation area set up by the enforcement team, or face arrest.
Enforcement officers read the court-ordered injunction to the protesters who remained at scene. During the course of day, several individuals refused to leave the area resulting in the arrest of 3 people for breaching the injunction order. They were all released by Island District GIS without process from the Lake Cowichan RCMP Detachment.
During the course of the enforcement, one police officer was allegedly assaulted by a suspect who then fled in the woods. A detailed report to Crown counsel will be forwarded with consideration of criminal charge(s).
Further updates will be posted in the Lake Cowichan RCMP Detachment website as and when available.
