Off duty officer observations lead to drugs and firearms seizure

On July 24, 2022 an off duty Comox Valley RCMP officer observed what she believed to be a stolen vehicle being driven in Courtenay. Frontline officers were able to locate the vehicle and arrest the occupant thanks to her keen observations. The subsequent search of the vehicle located cash, loaded firearms, and what is believed to be fentanyl and methamphetamine. This is the second significant seizure in just a few weeks here in the Comox Valley said Cst. Monika Terragni, Media Relations Officer, Comox Valley RCMP. Our officers are committed to the safety of our community, on and off duty she added. 38-year old Joseph Kidd has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm without authorization, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of stolen property and more.

Slow down.

On October 9, 2022 at 1:15 a.m. a Comox Valley Municipal Traffic member was on Veteran’s Memorial Parkway when he observed what he believed to be two vehicles street racing. The member picked the fastest of the two vehicles, travelling 124 km/hr (in a 60km/hr zone), and pulled it over. The grey Jeep Wrangler was impounded for 7 days and driver issued a violation ticket for excessive speed. (Ref. Comox Valley RCMP 2022-16082)

On October 11, 2022 a Comox Valley Municipal Traffic member was on the Inland Island Highway near Piercy Road when he observed a vehicle travelling at 183km/hr (in a 110km/hr zone). The Mazda 3 was impounded for 7 days and the driver issued a violation ticket for excessive speed.

On October 12, 2022 at 12:20 a.m. a Comox Valley Frontline member was on Comox Road when he observed a vehicle approaching him at 96km/hr (in a 50km/hr zone). The member pulled the vehicle over and after speaking with the driver, initiated an impaired driving investigation. The member determined that the driver’s ability to drive was in fact impaired by alcohol. The Hyundai Elantra was impounded for 30 days and the driver issued a 90-day driving prohibition to go along with her excessive speeding ticket. (Ref. Comox Valley RCMP 2022-16250)

On October 20, 2022 a Comox Valley Municipal Traffic member was on Guthrie Road when he observed a vehicle travelling at 118km/hr (in a 50km/hr zone). The Mazda 3 was impounded for 7 days and the driver issued a violation ticket for excessive speed.

On October 27, 2022 a Comox Valley Municipal Traffic member was on the Comox Valley Parkway when he observed a vehicle travelling at 134km/hr (in a 80km/hr zone). The Mini Cooper was impounded for 7 days and the driver issued a violation ticket for excessive speed.

Are you missing a canoe?

On October 10, 2022 police were called to a residence in Fanny Bay after a man with a canoe allegedly stole a duffle bag from a residence. The man went to another residence where he allegedly stole a paddle and then took to the water in the canoe. Frontline members went to the area, located the man paddling the canoe adjacent to shore, and managed to get him to paddle into shore where he was arrested on outstanding warrants and new charges. Police do not believe the red Vanguard canoe belongs to him and would like to get it back to the rightful owner. Halloween in the Comox Valley

Halloween was a busy 24-hours for the frontline members of the Comox Valley RCMP. Officers were called to 5 abandoned 911 reports, one report of an abandoned vehicle, 2 alarms, 2 assaults, 7 requests to check the well being of someone, 5 calls to assist other agencies (fire department, EHS), 2 possible breaches of court ordered conditions, 9 bylaw complaints (fireworks, noise), 9 disturbances, 2 domestic incidents, 3 drug related incidents, 4 mischief reports, 1 missing person, 2 motor vehicle incidents, 3 reports of lost/found property, 2 suspicious circumstance reports, 3 thefts reports, 3 threats reports, 7 traffic complaints, and 3 reports of unwanted people.
