File # 2022-34403

The Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a motor vehicle collision between a pedestrian in a wheelchair and a motor vehicle. The incident occurred at approximately 8 PM on Wednesday September 28, 2022, near the intersection of Railway Ave and Fifth St.

Police, Fire and EHS responded. The victim, a man in his early 60’s, suffered serious injures and was later airlifted to a hospital in Vancouver. The vehicle involved, an older model Ford Ranger, was driven by a woman in her 60’s who had one other passenger in the vehicle. Neither of the two in the pickup were injured.

After speaking with witnesses and gathering evidence at the scene, it appears to investigators that the driver of the pickup was proceeding eastbound on Fifth St, and had just driven over a slight crest in the roadway when the truck collided with the pedestrian/wheelchair. The driver of the pickup braked but was unable to stop before striking the wheelchair. The point of impact was in the east bound lane adjacent to the railway tracks which cross Fifth St. At the time of impact, the victim was not in a marked crosswalk.

Investigators do not believe that alcohol or excessive speed were contributing factors. At the time of collision, it was dark out and the roads were dry.

The vehicle involved was impounded and will undergo a mechanical inspection. Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the collision, who has not not already spoken with investigators, to please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2022-34403.
