Charges laid in May 2021 fatal crash

Criminal Code charges have been laid against the driver involved in the fatal car crash from May of 2021, that claimed the life of a 74-year-old woman. The incident occurred on Thursday May 20,  2021, at the intersection of Cranberry Ave and the Trans-Canada Highway.

On Friday August 26, 2022, officers with the Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Unit attended to the home of 50-year-old Colin Hewitt and arrested him on charges of Dangerous Driving Causing Death, Impaired Driving Causing Death and Impaired Operation over .08 Causing Death.

A judicial bail hearing was held later that same day. Following the bail hearing, Hewitt was released from custody and issued with a court appearance for Tuesday September 12, 2022 in Nanaimo Provincial Court.
