Summer safety tips

Summer is the time where memories are made and when we pack up the family and head off on vacation to enjoy quality time. Before driving away, did you take a few minutes to think about your home and some ways to keep it safe?

The following are some things to think about before you leave on your trip:

• Did you lock all of your doors and windows and set your alarm (if you have one)? If your home is alarmed, did you provide the access code to someone?
• Did you double check to ensure that the little window over the kitchen sink and in the bathtub were also locked? Criminals often gain access through these windows as they’re often overlooked
• Did you tell anyone you’re leaving and leave a contact number with them? This could be a trusted neighbour, family member or your Block Watch Captain.
• Be wary of posting info on social media sites about your trip. This gives criminals a heads up that your home is vacant.
• Ensure when telling someone of your absence, to also tell them if any vehicles or people will be staying at your home. Police often respond to calls from concerned neighbours who see unfamiliar people or vehicles at homes that are vacant. A simple phone call to a trusted person would have negated police attendance.
• Did you cancel your newspaper, arrange to have your grass mowed, and put your mail delivery on hold?
• Did you remove valuables from plain view such as jewelry, small electronics, booze, extra keys, cash, etc.? Get creative and stash them out of sight but try not to forget where you hid them, that could be embarrassing!
• Advance planning is important to ensure a safe and successful trip. This also applies to your home.
