Pedestrian dies in hit and run collision

The Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a hit and run collision that claimed the life of a 90-year old woman. The incident happened in the 2800 block of Cedar Road, near Bennie Road and was reported at approximately 8:50 PM on Saturday February 24, 2024. A passing motorist located the unconscious person lying on the roadway and called 911.

Police, BCEHS and Fire attended. Despite the valiant efforts of bystanders and first responders who administered emergency first aid, the woman was determined to be deceased at the scene. The BC Coroners Service was advised and attended to the scene and confirmed the death.

Based on evidence gathered by Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Services and an RCMP Accident Collision Analyst, the incident is being investigated as a fatal hit and run with a motor vehicle. The roadway was closed for approximately 4.5 hours as the on-scene investigation was conducted and forensic evidence was gathered.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the driver and vehicle involved. Investigators are also asking for any motorists who were in the area between 8 PM and 8: 45 PM on Saturday February 24, 2024, to check their dash cam video.
